What is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a life-saving medical treatment for individuals whose kidneys aren't functioning adequately. This procedure helps filter and purify the blood using a machine, acting as an artificial kidney.

Types of Dialysis

  • Hemodialysis: Blood is pumped outside the body to a dialysis machine that filters it and returns the clean blood back to the body.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis: Using the lining of the abdomen to filter blood internally. Includes CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) and APD (Automated Peritoneal Dialysis)

Why is Dialysis Needed?

The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste and excess fluid from the bloodstream. When they fail, harmful wastes accumulate, leading to potentially life-threatening conditions. Dialysis helps restore this balance.

The Dialysis Experience

Dialysis can be an adjustment, both emotionally and physically. However, with the right guidance, resources, and support, many individuals lead fulfilling lives while on dialysis.

Choosing the Right Treatment Option

Each patient's needs are unique. It's important to discuss with a nephrologist to determine the best type of dialysis and the right treatment plan tailored for individual needs.
